Jocelyn cut her steak while mentally running through her schedule for tomorrow. Busy described it best. She sighed before forking a piece of steak in her mouth. How many days until spring break?

“What are you sighing about?” Mom asked from across the table.

“Nothing, because she’s eighteen with no responsibilities, and no one her age has anything to sigh like that about,” Dad said with an expression of reproach on his face. “Try doing my job and then you can sigh all you like.”

Jocelyn knew better than to respond. She put another piece of steak in her mouth so she wouldn’t be tempted.

“Speaking of responsibility… I have time to tutor you tonight.”

Her heart thudded in her chest as she met his brown gaze. “Thank you,” she said in a small voice.

“Uh-huh.”

Mom said something Jocelyn didn’t catch because white noise crackled in her ears. She tried to keep her outward appearance calm and relaxed, even though she was trembling inside.

Tutoring meant only one thing when Dad said it.

She glanced at him but quickly turned her gaze to her plate, focusing on finishing her dinner as quickly as possible. The moment the last bite touched her lips she pushed her seat back and stood, gathering her dishes. “I’m going to my room.”

“Get ready. I’ll be there in a few minutes.” Dad said without looking at her.

That simple command sent tingles up her spine. She nodded, went to the kitchen to put her dishes in the dishwasher, and then rushed to her room. After closing the door, she leaned against it.

Tutoring.

Why tonight? Had she made him angry?

If she apologized…

Yeah, right. When had that ever worked? And she didn’t even know what she would be apologizing for, which would only piss him off more.

She pushed away from the door, opened it, and went to her bathroom. She had to get ready. Things would go badly for her if she wasn’t ready when Dad arrived.

She locked the bathroom door, even though she was the only one who used it. Still, it made her feel better knowing Mom couldn’t just walk in. Not that she would but paranoia was a powerful thing. Mom could figure it out at any moment. That she hadn’t already was a mini-miracle. Mom actually believed Dad was tutoring an honors student.

Jocelyn cleaned up as quickly as she could and then hurried back to her room. She stopped short in the doorway with a startled gasp.

Dad sat on the foot of her bed. He’d undone the buttons of his shirt, letting it fall open so his dark-brown six-pack was on full display. “Come in and close the door already.”

“Sorry.” She hurried inside.

“Sorry what?”

She paused before closing the door and swallowed. “S-Sorry, Daddy.”

From the kitchen, Mom called, “I’m going to watch TV. You two don’t stay up too late.”

Jocelyn opened her mouth and it was on the tip of her tongue to call for help.

Dad called back, “This won’t take longer than an hour. Maybe two.” He made a rumbling noise and said in a lower voice, “Or three.”

She glanced at him, trembling at the naked lust in his brown eyes. For her. His own daughter.

“Close the door.”
