Adam Alexander Haviaras

Adam Alexander Haviaras is a Canadian author and historian specialising in ancient and medieval history. He is best known for the bestselling historical fantasy series Eagles and Dragons and the award-winning Etrurian Players series.

Haviaras studied history and archaeology at the University of Toronto, Canada, and the University of St Andrews, Scotland. "As a young man, I fell in love with both history and creative writing at the same time," he says. This dual passion has led him to create stories that combine historical accuracy with immersive fiction.

In 2014, he founded Eagles and Dragons Publishing to produce high-quality historical fiction and nonfiction. Since then, his books have reached readers in over 35 countries. "Our goal has always been to bring the ancient and medieval worlds to life in a way accessible to everyone," Haviaras explained.

He often travels to the places he writes about, such as Roman sites in Tunisia and Egypt. He shares these experiences with his audience on his long-running blog, Writing the Past, and on Eagles and Dragons Publishing's YouTube channel, where he posts tours of historical and archaeological sites.

His latest novel, The Asp of Saqqara (2025), begins a new historical series set during Alexander the Great's campaigns. The story follows Hanbal, the son of an Egyptian horse breeder whose life is destroyed by King Darius's Persian army. Forced to become an assassin, Hanbal seeks revenge for his family and fights for the Egyptian people.

When Alexander of Macedon liberates Egypt, Hanbal hopes for a new beginning. But he soon faces a harrowing choice when Athenian spies order him to assassinate the new Pharaoh in exchange for his family's safety. "Killing evil is easy… Killing hope is not," the novel declares. Haviaras creates an intimate and gripping account of love, war and the moral dilemmas of the ancient world.
