David Sandner

Dr. David Sandner is an American writer and academic specializing in fantastic literature. He is a Professor of English at California State University, Fullerton.

David Sandner was born in San Francisco. He holds a PhD in English Literature from the University of Oregon and an M.A. from San Francisco State University, with his academic journey beginning with a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz.

His scholarly focus lies at the crossroads of Romanticism, children’s and young adult literature, and the fantastic. His work explores the nuanced interactions between these genres, particularly how they intersect with popular literature.

He has authored several important works in the field, including The Fantastic Sublime: Romanticism and Transcendence in Nineteenth-Century Children's Fantasy Literature and the more recent Critical Discourses of the Fantastic, 1712–1831, which examines the development of fantastic literature through its early critical discourses.

Sandner is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) and the Horror Writers Association (HWA). His creative works have been featured in esteemed publications such as Asimov’s, PodCastle, and Weird Tales, and anthologies edited by notable figures like Ellen Datlow and Mike Ashley.

His recent literary contributions include His Unburned Heart (2024), The Afterlife of Frankenstein (2023), a reflective exploration in novelette format, and Mingus Fingers (2019), co-written with Jacob Weisman. Additionally, Sandner has edited several collections and has been a significant voice in anthologies such as The Treasury of the Fantastic and critical essay collections on Philip K. Dick.

David Sandner’s academic honors include numerous awards for Outstanding Scholarship and Creative Activity from California State University, Fullerton. He regularly teaches courses on British Romanticism and popular genre literature, such as Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror.
