Lyon's first significant literary achievement came with the publication of Mountain (1983), her first collection of poetry, which established her voice within the Appalachian tradition. She went on to publish numerous books for children and young adults, many of which reflect her Appalachian roots, such as Borrowed Children (1988), which won the Golden Kite Award.

In addition to her writing career, Lyon has taught at various institutions, including the University of Kentucky and Centre College, and has conducted workshops and writing conferences.
