September Publishing

September Publishing is an independent publisher of an award-winning list of illustrated, non-fiction and fiction print, ebooks and audiobooks. Our focus is on titles that will expand readers’ worlds, either feeding their passionately held interests or inspiring new journeys in literature and art.

We were founded in 2014 with a clear mission to put our authors first — offering focused editorial, marketing and publicity attention; to work with them as a team on the long-term success of their books. We are unusual in that we place creative collaboration high on our list of priorities and skills, and are determined always to work with the best creatives and consultants. The September team have always worked remotely, meaning a consistent team and a business whose profits are funnelled back into the books, not into expensive overheads. Over time we have worked with some of the best designers in the UK, developed fine new talent with our intern programme, and built careers and long-term publishing programmes with new literary writers, artists and subject experts.

September won a BA Small Press of the Year Regional Award in 2020 and 2021, and in 2023 we were Highly Commended. In 2020 we were also nominated for the IPG Newcomer Award and were a beneficiary of the Arts Council Culture Recovery Fund. We have published books with English Heritage and the Van Gogh Museum and sold rights to our titles in multiple languages and territories. In 2021 we are beginning a process of reviewing our carbon footprint and the sustainability of our practices and partnerships.

The past and present, I have come to realize, are in constant dialogue, acting upon one another in a kind of reciprocal pressure dance.

Some sexual assault victims may continue to date their assaulters in an effort to neutralize the trauma or regain some control over an event that left them powerless. In fact, many reach out to their attacker again specifically to try to regain power in the relationship. While others explain that they believed he may acknowledge what he did and apologize.

At one point I refer to myself as “completely oblivious to everything in the world, it seems.” It’s not just self-deprecation; it’s self-flagellation. I am thirty-three in this interview, not a sixteen-year-old actress, and I haven’t interacted with anyone, press or otherwise, in this flighty mode in a long time. I am, in interaction with him, no longer someone who makes their own films or has a voice. Somehow his very presence has taken who I have become away from me. To someone watching the interview, I would look happy to be there as well as deferential and almost obsequious. What I don’t look like is a woman being interviewed by a man who assaulted her.
