Ulysses may have been dubbed the 20th century's best novel, but it has also been called the most vulgar, obscene and blasphemous book ever to be banned in the U.S. For many years, copies of the novel were seized before they could enter the U.S.
Cat’s Cradle was banned in 1972 by an Ohio school district board, along with three other titles. Apparently one of the board members’ secretary read ANOTHER Vonnegut novel for half an hour and found to be “completely sick,” and “GARBAGE.” There was no indication of Cat's Cradle being read!
Written in 1759, Voltaire's Candidie touches on a wide variety of topics, including religion, government and philosophers. Unsurprisingly, it was banned almost immediately due to its touchy subjects.
The Awakening, published in 1899, was banned due in part to its treatment of gender roles and unorthodox views on femininity, but also for its honest depiction of female sexuality - a highly taboo subject at the time.
