The story begins with Eddie, the central character. He happens to be an elderly gentleman; he works at an amusement park named “Ruby Pier” as the head of the maintenance.
The regular visitors to the park generally know Eddie. People sometimes humorously call him “Eddie Maintenance.” There are several patches on his uniform that he wears while doing the maintenance work.
It transpires that Eddie had served in the Second World War as a soldier. He received a leg injury during the war that has left his leg crippled. He is not happy working at the park but he does so because he has inherited that job from his dad.
