Heidegger: Philosophy in an Hour

By shunning such things as comfort and the easy life, and by not ignoring the question of death, we can ‘​​​​​​​bring Dasein into the simplicity of its fate’​​​​​​​. In angst, or disquieting guilt, or the grim prospect of dying, the being of Dasein is disclosed to us.

grasping the ‘​​​​​​​finitude of one’​​​​​​​s existence’​​​​​​​, one frees oneself from the shallow ‘​​​​​​​multiplicity of possibilities’​​​​​​​ that life presents to us.

On the other hand, Heidegger’​​​​​​​s Dasein reaches beyond the realm of logic, beyond syntax, into the barely graspable ground of our basic intuition.

but I cannot doubt that I am thinking. Thus: ‘​​​​​​​I think, therefore I am.

Descartes had argued that it was possible to doubt the existence of everything.

Da-sein. Literally ‘​​​​​​​There’​​​​​​​ (Da–​​​​​​​) ‘​​​​​​​being’​​​​​​​ (–​​​​​​​sein). The essential element of Dasein is thus ‘​​​​​​​being-there’​​​​​​​, or ‘​​​​​​​being-in-the-world’​​​​​​​. This is our existence, our ‘​​​​​​​mine-ness’​​​​​​​. It is the ‘​​​​​​​specificity of our being’​​​​​​​ where ‘​​​​​​​we ourselves are’​​​​​​​. It is the place where subject encounters object.

Dasein is the entity ‘​​​​​​​which each one of us finds in the fundamental assertion: I am.
