It’s 1959. The battle for civil rights is raging. And it’s Sarah’s first day of school as one of the first black students at previously all-white Jefferson High.
No one wants Sarah there. Not the Governor. Not the teachers. And certainly not the students — especially Linda, daughter of the town’s most ardent segregationist.
Sarah and Linda are supposed to despise each other. But the more time they spend together, the less their differences matter. And both girls start to feel something they’ve never felt before. Something they’re determined to ignore.

All I can think of is how brave are all the women in here. The story felt super real despite being pure fiction. That talks a lot about the great research Robin Talley made to give us this masterpiece. I'm grateful for the space where she listed readings and videos so we can learn a lot more. I love the way she presents all this hard topics as if they were the most natural ones. I'm looking forward to reading more of her writing. CV

The values many of us take for granted today are the result of hard-fought battles that happened years, decades and centuries ago. Working alongside the civil rights leaders we revere today, like Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks, there were hundreds, if not thousands, of now-forgotten activists who sacrificed everything they had so people today could live the way we do. Every generation needs to remember that—and to remember that it’s up to us to make sacrifices of our own for the ones who will come next.

Sadly, discrimination, inequality and hate violence are very much still with us.

It isn’t about sacrificing us for the movement. It’s about making hard decisions. Because somebody has to.
