    CHAPTER ONE
    THE DARK LORD ASCENDING
The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands directed at each other's chests; then, recognizing each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and started walking briskly in the same direction. “News?” asked the taller of the two. “The best,” replied Severus Snape. “Tell me one last thing,” said Harry. “Is this real? Or has this been happening inside my head?”

I had proven, as a very young man, that power was my weakness and my temptation.

It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it.

I was gifted, I was brilliant. I wanted to escape. I wanted to shine. I wanted glory.

    “You’ll stay with me?”

    “Until the very end,”
