The title “A Farewell to Arms” comes from a poem that was composed by George Peele, a 16th century English dramatist.
The novel focuses on a romance between American Henry and Catherine Barkley. Henry is an expatriate American and Catherine Barkley has different nationalities. She is variously described as English or Scottish. The story is set against the backdrop of the World War, cynical soldiers, battles and the displacement of populations.
