Wilkes County was formed in 1777 by the North Carolina General Assembly and became effective February 15, 1778. The first court meeting was held March 2nd, 1778.
At the time these records were created, Wilkes County included all or part of current day Wilkes, Alexander, Allegheny, Ashe, Caldwell, Surry and Watauga Counties.
