B.R. Stateham

B.R. Stateham is an American author of genre fiction. He is best known for his dark noir and hardboiled detective novels, which often combine elements of crime fiction, science fiction, and the supernatural.

B.R. Stateham was born in the USA and has written for over 50 years. He describes storytelling as something built into a writer's psyche: "From birth, a writer has probably told some kind of story to himself or someone close to him, whether they were listening or not."

Stateham has been married to a retired teacher for 37 years. He credits his wife with helping him refine his ideas: "She has this thing of sitting down with me and discussing or verbally outlining concepts for stories bouncing around in my head." The couple has three grown children and six grandchildren.

Stateham writes in a variety of genres. His work includes short stories, novellas and novels. He likes to mix sub-genres in his writing. "Don't be surprised if you read something of mine traditionally found in the dark noir niche, with a touch of science fiction or the supernatural thrown in to spice up the story." His preferred style blends dark noir themes with hardboiled crime fiction.

His latest book, There Is No Johnny (2025), is a psychological thriller that explores the fine line between reality and illusion. The story follows a troubled man who insists that Johnny, his closest confidant, exists, yet no one else can see him. As his paranoia grows, past traumas and present horrors collide. The book blends noir fiction with psychological suspense, questioning what is real and imagined.

Stateham also writes about Smitty, an anti-hero. Smitty is a man with many faces — a killer, a spy or a private detective. "No one knows. But whatever Smitty is, know that he is very good at whatever hat he wears that day. In his latest collection, Smitty stalks his prey with ruthless precision.
