Andrew Madigan is an American novelist and freelance writer whose work focuses on family, crime and society. His latest novel, A Nice Safe Place (2024), is the first in a planned trilogy.
Andrew Madigan was born and raised in the USA. He holds a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from William & Mary. Andrew also earned a PhD in American Studies from Saint Louis University.
Madigan has lived in numerous places, including New York, Okinawa, Dubai, Tokyo, South Korea, Abu Dhabi, Virginia, the UK, Missouri, and a small town in Ohio. Reflecting on his time in Ohio, he remarked, "It was 10¼ excruciating months." His varied life experiences have greatly influenced his writing. He has a unique perspective on different cultures and environments.
Professionally, he has worked as a professor, university administrator, crime investigator, construction worker, driver, factory worker, food and book critic, military contractor, magazine editor, lawn Zamboni operator, lifeguard, rugby and football coach, janitor, ghostwriter, waiter, film extra, voice actor and Bill Murray stand-in. Madigan also played rugby in the USA, Asia and Europe during his early 40s.
Madigan's work has appeared in many prestigious publications, including The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Believer, The Observer, Lucky Peach, International Living, The Christian Science Monitor, The Iowa Review, The New Haven Review and The London Magazine. He has won several awards for short fiction, poetry, and journalism. His work has also appeared in anthologies such as Travel Writing 101 and New Asian Short Stories.
His first novel, Khawla's Wall, published by Second Wind, won two awards. His second novel, Dark End of the Street, was published by Gumshoe Books and has been translated into Spanish. His latest crime novel, A Nice Safe Place, published in 2024, delves into the dark underbelly of the Midwest. It follows the story of Amy Snyder, who disappears, leading her father, Wayne, on a harrowing search full of suspense and family secrets.
