Jesse Andrews is an American author and screenwriter. He co-wrote the screenplay for the animated film Luca (2021) and wrote both the novel and the feature-film adaptation of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2012).
Jesse Andrews was born and raised in Pittsburgh. He is a graduate of Schenley High School and Harvard University. He is also a former German youth hostel receptionist.
His debut novel, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, came out in 2012. It won Cybils Award for Young Adult Fiction and became The New York Times bestseller that inspired the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning film.
Despite the above, according to the American Library Association's Office of Intellectual Freedom, "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" tied for the tenth-most banned and challenged book of 2022. The novel has been challenged "because it was considered sexually explicit and degrading to women," as well as for its inclusion of profanity.
He also wrote the adaptation of David Levithan's novel, Every Day. The movie with the same title was directed by Michael Sucsy and starred Angourie Rice.
Jesse Andrews currently resides in Berkeley, CA.
