Deon Meyer

Deon Meyer is a South African author and screenwriter renowned for his profound contribution to the thriller genre, primarily writing in his native Afrikaans.

Deon Godfrey Meyer was born in Paarl. He studied at several universities, including the University of the Northwest and Stellenbosch University, where he eventually earned an MFA in Creative Writing.

His career began in journalism, where he gained a keen understanding of storytelling that later helped him develop his complex and engaging narratives. Transitioning through roles as an advertising copywriter and Internet manager, he has a rich history of brand strategy.

Meyer has published fifteen novels and two collections of short stories, all of which resonate with his deep passion for South Africa and its multifaceted society. His works, translated into 28 languages and published worldwide, explore intricate social dynamics and are often set against the rich, evocative landscapes of South Africa.

His characters, particularly in his well-known Benny Griessel series, are deeply flawed yet incredibly human and relatable.

His debut into the literary world began with a short story published by the Afrikaans magazine Huisgenoot, which set the stage for several successful publications. The storytelling prowess of Meyer extends beyond literature; he has also made significant strides in television and film. In addition to some TV series, he has written six screenplays.

Meyere has been honored with prestigious awards such as the French Le Grand Prix de Littérature Policière and the Swedish Martin Beck Award.

Reflecting candidly on his work, Meyer said, "I mostly follow the dictum 'conflict is the mother of suspense,' so I'll be looking at as many sources of conflict for the protagonists as possible within the parameters of verisimilitude."

Deon Meyer resides in Stellenbosch with his wife, Marianne.
