The Elements of Style
The Elements of Style was written by William Strunk, Jr and has long been considered one of the greatest books ever published on the art of writing. Time magazine has named it as one of the 100 most influential non-fiction books written in English since 1923. It is an American English writing style guide and has become the best-known in prescriptive treatment of English grammar and usage, and often is required reading in U.S. high school and university composition classes. The original 1918 edition of The Elements of Style detailed eight elementary rules of usage, ten elementary principles of composition, “a few matters of form”, and a list of commonly "misused" words and expressions, and a list of 57 "words often misspelled. This guide was originally intended for the private use of Strunk’s students but it became a campus classic and was widely known as “the little book.” The successive editions have since sold over ten million copies.
